I think his best effort was his last play, "The Tempest."

In earlier plays like Hamlet and your favourite, "The Scottish Play" (Believe it or not, it's considered bad luck in English theater circles to mention the name -- so we refer to it as "The Scottish Play"), Shakespeare is investigating the depths of human motive, and examining it from multiple angles (so I can see why you'd appreciate it).

But in the Tempest, he's going beyond the mere examination to arrive at serious conclusions as to what the human condition means. It's as though the earlier works were providing him with the pieces of a gigantic, complicated puzzle. And now, finally, at the very end, he puts it all together. At last, Shakespeare recapitulates his life's work and gives us an overall context that is stunning in its cummulative effect.

"What fools these mortals be."

"We are such stuff as dreams are made of; and our little life is rounded with a sleep."

He reaches new heights in expression and metaphor that are only hinted at in his earlier works. He saved the best for last.

Great Question.

By the pricking of my thumbs something wicked this way comes. As you might have guessed, Macbeth is my favorite. I also love the histories of Henry IV, Henry V and Henry VI.

MacBeth is my favorite, because it's just so fun. I know, I know it's a tragedy, but it's still so fun.

Othello is really good. It touched on topics of interracial relationships, inferiority complexes, betrayal, trust, etc. along with characters with so many dimensions. I love this play ^_^
