I am not talking about ocean waves.....I am talking about all waves....sound waves, electromagnetic waves,etc.....the ocean and the moon are not the answer. I agree with energy!

a wave is a dsplacement of energy through a medium. when energy entrs a medium, it affects the nearest and then the farther particles. in matter, all things vibrate in tiny ampllitudes. the energy is just potential energy these particles convert to get more kinetic energy with which to attain freater frequencies and amplitude. a wave because of th input of energy then, is just the kinetic theory percieved in macro scale.with water serfaces for example,

There are different ideas about waves source,some guess that comes from an ultimate energy in space,others say that materials energy may cause that.Anyway before you can find your answer first you should discover this.What is Wave,Energy or Material?(The Question That Noone Could Answer It Clearly Yet)

All space objects have fields around it Electrical and Magnetic. These fields interact with the fields of other space objects and this field interaction causes transfer of energy which is nothing but electromagnetic waves.
