Yes but slowly, why don't you put a USB 2 pci card in your computer it is very easy to do, if you have XP all you do is turn off the computer, unplug it, open it, slot in the card, plug it in again, turn it on, and Windows does the rest, that way the thing will work as it was meant to, Another thing if you have a large Disc (250 mega ) it will take for ever with 1.1 once you have got it loaded.

Well on a laptop it's not as simple as plugging in a Firewire PCI card since there are no PCI slots to plug it into. ;) The cable is expensive for a reason because a Firewire device isn't just changing to a different connector to make it USB. It has to convert standards from IEEE 1394 (Firewire) to USB. Go with the PC Card adapter the guy above suggested.

Yes, but my advice would be to get a PCI USB2.0 card and put that in your machine, plug the external hard drive into one of the ports on the PCI card, then the hard drive will work at full speed.

The PCI USB2.0 cards are cheap as well.

If it's for a laptop you can also get USB2.0 cards for them.
