In the Battle of Pelennor Fields (when they are storming the city of Minas Tirith) there were 250,000 Orcs according to the special features disc.

Apparently, Weta - who did all the make-up, made 1800 orc body suits and 10000 orc heads!

All of them!! he he he.... seriously, I don't know, they used a lot of the same people for different roles. For example, Lurtz, the main Uruk-hai who shot Boromir, was also the head Orc in Return of the King, the really deformed one. He was ALSO the Witchking of Angmar. Pretty cool, huh? That guy had three roles, two in the same movie!!

He even talked to himself in one part!!!

The exact number is never given but I would imagine somewhere around 10,000 or more. They were definitely a lot of them.
