E=mc^2 is still valid. It has nothing to do with the universe or large masses. It is about thins in the micro level, meaning the particle level physics. There is nothing absurd about it. Changes do happen and it is very slow for us to comprehend in a few life time.

the equation E=mc^2 is just the first term of a larger equation that only PhD on physics know(the second is: E=mc^2+c^4*p^2, and is just as valid now as it was when it was formulated. if any they just add a correction term at the equation using the perturbation theory
