Boston was never safe, unless you know the right people, and it still is that way. Except the people to know have changed.

Dorchester, Roxbury, Jamaica Plain, , East Boston, Sommerville all have some problems with violent crime. You could even be mugged on the Common at night. You might want to avoid these places as a tourist, but as a resident you would be safer than most other large cities.

Boston has a wealthy history and a varied neighbourhood; it has a legacy of arts, lifestyle, and education; Boston has something for everyone therefore discover what Boston may give you with hotelbye . The three-mile Freedom Trail brings you previous - and in to - 16 of the city's primary traditional monuments and sites. It's easy to check out, by the distinct red bricks in the sidewalk and by footprints at street crossings. The trail can take you to Old Granary Burying Ground wherever Paul Revere, Samuel Adams, and John Hancock are hidden; may get you to King's Chapel Burying Ground, the Boston's oldest cemetery; Old South Meeting House where in actuality the calling speeches of patriots spawned the Boston Tea Party and the Old State House, Boston's oldest public building and the site of the Boston Massacre.

Don't be afraid of Boston it has crime of course because it's a city but just try to avoid areas like mattapan mainly but that will be easy because unless a friend or you live there there is no point to go there it's not like it's a tourist attraction and avoid some parts of Dorchester but like any city you have a chance of getting mugged robbed or raped but the chances of those happening in the middle of the afternoon in back bay downtown where all the tourist attractions are you will be safe

People who are saying entire cities and probably just saying in general, because obviously every city has crime. Boston is just as dangerous as any big city. Don't come here expecting it to be the same as a small town in NewHampshire or soemthing like that. For the majority of the city if you use a little common sense, and aren't out at night walking alone or anything, you'd be fine.

Lucky us.....Boston has a few places you need to avoid and if you get lost....don't open your windows to ask directions if you end up in Roxbury, Mattapan, Dorchester and some places in East Boston. Be careful even downtown especially in Chinatown, theatre district and around the common at night.
If you are heading to Boston.....stay in maybe Cambridge in a hotel on or near the T (train) Newbury St is really nice and safe too......Good luck and have fun. Don't be scared ... just be careful.

Per capita, Boston is actually VERY safe for a large American city (far safer than my hometown of Washington DC... and Baltimore's even worse). The VIOLENT crime in Boston is centered in Dorchester, Mattapan and Roxbury. Most parts of Boston proper are of course prone to break-ins and vandalism, but are very safe from violent crime. I live in Brighton, which is within Boston city limits, and pretty much the worst crime we see in my neighborhood is loud college parties. Just use common sense... don't go to isolated dark streets at night, for example, but as long as you stay away from the worst neighborhoods it's sage.

I live in Jamaica Plain. We don't have any problems with violence. In fact it is one of the nicest, expensive and safest parts of Boston.

Please don't avoid coming to Jamaica Plain. It is beautiful. We have the Arnold Arboretum here(http://www.arboretum.harvard.edu/), and it is visited by thousands from around the world each year. Some people even come as far as Asia to see this great Boston attraction.
The Jamaica Pond is very beautiful also.

KNOW YOUR FACTS HEREIAM (You have definitely not been to Jamaica Plain, cause if you have you will know that a lot of people will love to live in this part of town)
