Harry and the others are forbidden to perform withcraft in which benefits themselves. There are dire sircumstances they would suffer should they use magic to advance, get rich, pass tests, etc. Imagine how wealthy Ron Weasley would make his family (they aren't very rich and there's so many of them). The witches that are not so beautiful would certainly change their looks. It is just strictly forbidden. It also helps Harry accept himself as he is (sort of a moral victory for the boy; after all he had to be subjected to poor treatment from the Dursleys).

That is a very well thought out question - maybe he just wears his glasses to fit in with his image, and in fact has perfect eyesight!
