If you have a Staples nearby, they are surprisingly cheap. They guarantee they'll beat any competetor's price. If not, Sam's Club or CostCo are probably the way to go. If you have a good flea market there, (one that has a lot of vendors that sell new items), that might be the way to go. The problem with buying used is that it is very difficult to find what you want, and it may not be in the best shape. You can find some good deals used, but it might take you a LOT of time hunting for one. If you want to go that route, the first place I would look is in the paper's classifieds and on craigslist.org. These will still allow you to do some "shopping around" before you buy. While you might find something at a garage sale, in the past I have found that if you are looking for something specific, you will have a hard time finding it at a garage sale unless it's kid's clothing or baby furniture. (Not that you can't find great stuff at garage sales, just that taking a "shopping list" doesn't usually work well). Same thing goes with smaller flea markets. You might also be able to make one much cheaper than you can buy one, if you don't care that much about looks. A solid wood door makes a great desk, for example. You can often get some used cabinets for fairly cheap. You just might want to think outside the box a bit if money is a real concern.
