When I'm editing a document, I use save. It saves the changes.
When I'm creating a new document from an old one I use "Save as...". That way the old document is not changed. Any changes I make are on the new document.
I use this alot with templates.

"Save As" allows you to save the file with a different name or format. "Save" keeps it as it is.
