The brain interprets the sensation of "falling asleep" in many ways. Often, we simply "turn off" like a switch, or just drift gently off in our thoughts. The "falling into a hole" sensation may be a result of being overtired, but is simply one of the many methods your brain is choosing to interpret the sense of shutting down. If there is any truth in the "out of body" experience (which I do believe, having done it), it does not interpret that way from what I understand -- at least not for me. It also does not happen spontaneously to me, but is a deliberate act that feels like a rising and pulling away. For me, the "falling in the hole" ususally comes if I am really tired or, maybe, just a bit drunk! lol!! Bottom line, it is normal, so tell your fiance to stop being creeped out about it -- it's fine.

Hi I think it may have to do with your inner ear. Have you eve lost your balance and felt like your going to fall it may be that once your body relaxes the fluids in your inner ear shift causes that feeling ..its also possible that your blood pressure may have droped a little fast and that may also cause the falling feeling you are having.

Probably has to do with your equilibriam bein acustomed to you body orientated up right. So when you lay down, your ears (mostly control equilibrium) must adjust to the change.

always think "the simplest" - when you lay down your breathing becomes more shallow - it is just a feeling from slightly less oxygen - try having a small fan in the room

I don't know, but it happens to me as well. Maybe it is as your muscles relax, so you "sag" a bit. Sometimes, it is such a jolt it actually wakes me up again. Far more believable than spirits.

Perhaps it is the root of the expression "dropping off to sleep".
