I think it's genetic. Phobia about spiders is universal across all humans world-wide. Zoologists have noticed many of our primate cousins, like chimps and apes, also show a similar ratio of individuals with extreme fear of spiders. It must be some kind of inborn warning mechanism. Spider poison can be nasty stuff and maybe our anscestors who steared well clear of spiders were able to have more children who also had this trait. My dad is extremely freaked by spiders.

it may not necessarily be that we are afraid of them, because most little spiders people see cant actually harm them, but just the thought of something with all those legs crawling on you is creepy, like if someone asks me if i have a spider phobia i would probably say yes, but its less fear and more just i hate spiders cuz theyre the creepiest bugs..if that makes any sense. most ppl i kno who also have a spider phobia agree with me and its not actually that were AFRAID of the little bug

Personally? I believe it's because spiders mind their own business, go about doing what they have to do, and don't actually give a dee-diddly-damn "what" humans think! Then there are humans who "see" this, and it intimidates them, "some" to the point of hysteria! I don't like "or" dislike spiders. I simply try to respect that they are a part of a cycle of life, like snakes are. I don't go to dinner with them, nor do I go out of my way to harm them. But then, I'm a retired Animal Care & Control Officer, I don't "try" to hurt anything if I can help it. However, if there is a spider on my arm, my voice goes from alto to seprano in 2 seconds! I can't explain that even to "me." hahaha!

I've know a couple of people, one a very strong, athletic man, nearly killed by brown recluse spiders.

Psychological science has identified four influences on our intuitions about risk. First, we fear what our ancestral history has prepared us to fear. Human emotions were road tested in the Stone Age. Yesterday's risks prepare us to fear snakes, lizards, and spiders,we fear what we cannot control.

Personally, I hate spiders (or anything that crawls, for that matter) because they're icky, and make my skin crawl...they give me the creeps!
