I live in a hostel and want to make it wifi enabled. We are round about 20 guys living there. We have option of 256kbps ADSL connection. So i want to know that how many laptops can a single wireless modem/router can handle? Do i have to connect more than one modem? Also how many laptops can a wireless modem support?

hundreds to thousands depending on the range of IP address the router allows.... but the connection speed will suffer.

The best answer is to simply try and connect as many as you can. I'd be surprised if you manage to connect 20 computers up all at the same time but if the network is working fine with, say, 15 and stops working after that then you know you've reached your limit and you need to add another wireless router.

A 256kbps line is pretty slow by today's standards, I would try to increase the speed if possible. Also, it only takes ONE guy downloading music or films to clog up the entire connection so you may want to limit people to just web browsing instead.

Usually 50 is the limit.

Your router's website should tell you how many computers it can take. My BT Voyager 2100 will take up to ten - if I remember rightly.
