English is the de-facto language, not the official language.

Dane, you do remember correctly about German. But it was not to make it the official language. It was just to print legal documents in German for pennsylvania farmers.

so some distance as i know English is the national language, and that's the way it has continually been by way of the direction of background. issues substitute and persons evolve alongside with the transition of time. What you're youngsters are discovering, apart from conversing spanish, is tolerance, and having that high quality is extremely significant. It enables us grow to be greater effective people, the form of people who're no longer constrained to make certain basically one area yet all the climate any subject might have. The tutor "Dora the Explorer" does no longer basically prepare youngsters Spanish, it evokes youngsters to benefit English in Spanish conversing countries too. Why? via fact understanding a thank you to talk English provides them greater effective possibilities, and a similar ought to be pronounced right here interior the U. S.. As for the spanish conversing people who come right here. i'm rather valuable maximum discover ways to talk the language to a minimum of an issue-unfastened point of understandment. in the event that they do no longer learn it quickly, then they do finally, despite the fact that if that's usually greater mushy for them to talk of their mom language. particularly whilst needed issues are at stake (e.g. money). all people is entitled to their own comments, yet look at it this way: conversing spanish skill quite some greater effective "$$$" ?.

Lets look at some other countries for some ideas.

If you go to Germany, EVERYONE speaks German, but many speak multiple languages to include English. If you go to say, Spain, most speak Spanish, Portuguese and some other languages, to include English.

If you go to South America, they speak the native language of their country, but most speak at least one other language, English. If you go to a tourist site, they speak English.

So, America is the melting pot, but English has always been our main language. There is nothing wrong with making it the Official language of this country. People can still speak, write or what ever, in their own language.

If you go to school, you need to read and understand English cause we the taxpayers cant afford to have a dozen different people in each school, that speak your language, trying to teach you in your language. If your from Mexico, speak English, Viet Nam, speak English, Taiwan, speak English.

Dern Tootin' it is. All of our founding documents were in English. All of our laws are written in English. If you go to most any part of any state, you will find people speaking - you guessed it - ENGLISH. Not Spanish, not German, and not Chinese. Go to Germany and see how many signs are posted in English. Go to Mexico and see how many things are printed in English. We may be a melting pot, but the intentions from the beginning was that we were to speak English. It is our national language - but our forefathers never predicted that it would ever be challenged.

Actually is you check the minutes and activity of the First Continental Congress, you will see that Benjamin Franklin took care of that 200 years ago.

The problem is Americans have forgotten our history. And replaced it with movie segments.

Did you know Mel Gibson won the revolutionary war.

I think it should be determined by the individual states what languages should be "legal" in official documents and vital services and such like.

I don't support making English your national language, because it further supports the fallacious image that all the people who migrated to the US, or the New World, were English.

Indeed, shouldn't there be more efforts to return to your roots? Certain nationalities migrated to specific areas of the US. For example, scandinavians migrated to Minnesota.

If I remember correctly, there was an effort by a state, I can't remember the name of, to name its official language german. This was blocked by the central government.

Effectively it already is.

all Federal courts are in English
all state and Territorial courts are in English by law (except PR)

I don't care what you speak at home but I think everyone should learn English to become a Citizen so we can all communicate.

It's kind of funny how there are so many people saying that English should be made our official language, especially when so many of these same people don't know how to speak it or write it properly.

It is time. I am all for speaking more than one language, but we need to have street signs, etc, in one language, and people should have to speak that language to live here.

Yes! I'm not racist or anything but why should we have to press 1 or 2 to hear our own language.... sorry but that's how I feel - If you are in America speak our language... if you don't like it then get out... I know I'm harsh but it's my opinion.
