We don't have a dishwasher, and no matter how much boiling water I pour through, or how long i leave it to soak, I never seem to be able to get rid of the starchy residue that is left behind by the rice/spaghetti etc...

I have never had the starch problem with my seive however I have had buildup in my plastic sieve and soaking it overnight in vinegar water removed everything. Since vinegar will remove starch off an iron it might work for you. I would use about 1 cup to half a kitchen sink of water or about two gallons.

Not having a dishwasher is great.. a waste of water. Cleaning a sieve.. I am not entirely sure of what you mean but trying to search your meaning, you might take the sieve out(supposing you can take it out) and leaving it sit in boiling water.. that is get water to boiling, take it off the stove and put the sieves into it for a while.
