A combination of the two. we are presented with choices that we are able to make. Each choice leads to another choice. Fate has a hand in the path from choice to choice but ultimately we are each responsible for our own lives.

I have taken much time to think about such a question. I truly believe that the answer is unknowable. The reason it is unknowable is that the only means of knowing such a fact would be through experience, and while we can experience many things we can never know weather our action was caused or it was a causer, or it was both.

That being said, my feeling on the matter at hand is that there is no fate, but we do not have free will either. To believe in fate one believes in a predetermined future. What I believe is called Indetermanism. Free Will is a type of indertermanism that states that the future is based on our individual will. I think the future is based on elements more basic than a human will; such as truly random fluctuations in the energy scape of the universe.

Free Will - and the free will choices of others. We are all free moral agents and have the ability to choose our own destiny. We sometimes make those choices based on the worst possible information, things like our own emotions, input from friends who frankly aren't doing that hot themselves, news agencies and sources who often slant the truth to their own perspective and misguided self-appointed "guides" who being blind themselves lead the blind into the ditch. Other times we make those life altering choices based on the appetites of our own desires at the moment.
We are also affected very greatly by the choices of others based many times on these same poor circumstances and information. These are the reasons our world is in the mess it is in now. If any one of us could collect all the information about a certain subject, sort that information to tell us the truth of the situation, leave our own personal predjudice and even opinions out of the decision and if we could all do that for every decision we'd have a pretty great world. Too bad about that.

Both, in a way. I believe that we chart out our lives in heaven, and that's where the "free will" comes into play, because we can chart whatever we want there. But once we come here, we should follow the chart we've set, and that's the "fate." You can get sidetracked, and that's "free will" again, but you'll feel crummy until you get back on track again, and that's "fate." Wow, I hope that isn't too confusing.

Well, the question is kind of indirectly direct. If free will governed you life, it wouldn't be free exactly would it?

Free will is kind of funny, in that we as humans are so free, we can even come to the conclusion that we are not. That is ultimate freedom.

I think it's silly to conclude that Abraham Lincoln was born to be president, or that Babe Ruth was "born" to be a home run hitter. However, there comes a time in everyone's life that they can become the author of their own existence. And the pages are left to be written by your hand.

We all have that power.

Fate
Our lives are so small in comparision to the direction that the world is going, the only role free will plays is how we react to the circumstances(fate) put in front of us, whether we look on the bright side and try to grow from it and become strong from that situation or just clamp up and become bitter towards whats in front of us. Overall our lives that we live inside of us(our feelings) our affected by our free will, but how we let our feelings control us just adds to the outcome fate has for us in the future. So to sum up my answer in one sentence I will say, "Fate controls our lives, but in the end we control our outcome."

the will itself is free. A willed action is governed by fate.

Example: At any time you can jump, but as soon as you do, gravity comes into play.

Both. I try my best in both areas because I find they compliment each other. For example, I can think two ways about something that is very important to me. I write. Sometimes I fail. I continue to try until I succeed. But as I try, I keep in mind that it is my fate to quit or stop being a writer. I try to accept the best and the worst in my situation. I find this is healthy for me.

Without a doubt, free will. However I wish I could believe in fate, then I would never have to worry about my death, as it would be pre-planned, now I have to wear seat-belts whenever I drive and lock my doors at night! ;-)

Fate but with the illusion of free will.
