Most of my work experience has been customer service, credit control and administration. One of the reasons why I want to become a tax adviser is because I enjoy working with figures and there are lots of opportunities such as becoming a self employed tax adviser, etc. However, the obstacle that I can see is that my academic qualifications are not that good & usually employers these days require applicants to have at least a 2.1 in their degree. My age is another problem.

Please advise how I can overcome these problems & if there are any other careers that I can pursue which do nor require such high academic achievements.

Thanks

Manjinder

A colleague once suggested to me that I qualify as a certified accountant, to broaden my professional qualifications and add a further string to my bow. It seemed good advice, but which ultimately I chose not to follow it. You could take a part time course and then have another string to your bow to set you apart from the common herd! The website is www.accaglobal.com/prospectivestudents/ - 22k.

Good luck!

Have you thought about training to be a tax lawyer.? Having a degree already you can apply to do a one year CPE course and then a one year vocational training course, after that depending on whether you want to be a barrister or solicitor, you follow the necessary work experience to qualify.

That would be called "liberal arts degree"! Now I understand the 2.1 or less GPA! Age is a problem at 38? You're not even dry behind the ears!

Tax can be a very specialised area and most tax advisors I know are already qualified accountants and have special tax qualifications as well.

If you want to get into tax, with what you have, then maybe try the local tax office.

Firstly as you seem to enjoy this as a vocation, you need to re-evaluate and stop selling out for want of their approval, clearly you sound good at what you do, so i suggest you turn your abilities the other way, work for yourself and teach people how to stop these sharks ripping them off, consider putting your own semina together ;) charge 100 people $100 a day and work smarter not harder ;) good luck !
