There are 3 important parts of communication that carry information, the words said, voice inflection, and body language. The reason why face 2 face communication is seen as the best is because you have all 3. Written communication is always lacking without body language and "written voice inflection" is often non-existent or hard to interrupt. Voice only communication is also lacking due to no body language. However video electronic communication has the potential to retain all 3. While you may never be able to reproduce the since of confidence that comes from a good handshake or the ability to offer someone a drink, I feel that Video conferences for reasons stated is a adequate substitute for face 2 face interaction.

Yes, e communication is the fad because of the speed and convenience it provides. What more it bridges the gap between opposite poles of the world, leaves no spaces unturned. But, nothing can compare to the human touch of face tro face interaction. It is just that, this method would take years before one can be in contact to most of the people around the globe. Which the internet can provide within minutes.

Of course it CAN be substituted, but that doesn't mean that it SHOULD. There are always little details a video can't capture that you would (unconsciously) notice in a face-to-face interaction.
