We already had our first frost - does that have anything to do with it?

Also, they're pretty overgrown. I'll need to trim back about a third of the bushes to tidy them up. Any suggestions?

Frost is my first clue. Beyond that, unless you have guidelines,,,IE: Home owner association issues, leave the trimming until just after the last frost.

The dormancy is a cleanup effort, naturally, and pruning when the sap has dropped might only serve to kill off existing plant and growth after.

The amount of pruning you suggest is best left until spring,,, or just before any frost.

If they are flowering bushes you have to tirm them right after the loose all of their flowers..
Any green shrub can be trimmed now...Then see if they come back next year...if not and they are too overgrown, just rip them out and replace them with something easier to take care of....
easy maintenance is the best way to go..
good luck

it ought to be you're able to desire to be trimming the outdated canes no longer the recent ones. enable the recent advance replace the older stems. no longer understanding what variety of barberry it extremely is i will no longer be able to declare a lot approximately protecting it small. maximum vegetation does no longer be afflicted via commonplace pruning like that. upload some good fertilizer and trim out the older no longer so good looking stems. (Canes? on a barberry? in any case...) And do a little tip pruning of those you go away so as that they are going to branch out and fill in.
