My sister-n-law is 14 and she's into "boy things". Would a paintball gun be suitable for her?

First tell us this. Has she played before? If so and she told you she likes it A LOT, then by all means get her a gun.

If she hasn't, offer to take her to play instead of buying her a gun right away. Nobody ever knows if they will like it until they play at least once. Sometimes it will take a few times. I know I was unsure until I started really getting into it. If she seems to like it, then ask her if she would want to go again one day. If she says yes and is really excited about it, then you know she would appreciate getting a gun, and you can surprise her with it at a later date.

And if you're going to take her, you might as well play yourself. A lot of girls I've talked to say they would not like it. Their opinions usually change right after their first game. Make sure you rent a chest protector for obvious female reasons. Though it's not absolutely necessary, I've read plenty of documents and opinions advising it. You want both of your experiences to be as positive as possible. Make sure you play with other new players that are at the field that day, because people with even a little experience start behaving in shocking (both in good and in bad) ways. Just be honorable and courageous when you play and I guarantee you both will have fun.

As for the gun. Be very careful with this decision. You need one that is easy to use, reliable, and comfortable for her. There are many different types and they all have different properties. Whatever you do, don't buy any marker that has a plastic body. I know many of those are good deals, but they have unsatisfactory performance (even for new players) and are prone to breakage if you do not take care of them. Some guns, like the Brass Eagle Blade, are inherantly dangerous in their design. I've heard of that specific marker exploding when shot. Any decent quality gun will NOT have this problem. Make sure you get a mask and CO2 tank as well.

If you want some help choosing, or if she took interest and wants to choose her own gun, send me a message any time and I will gladly walk you through the process. It would be best if you can find out what she would like in a gun so I can pick some specific models that are good quality and can satisfy her needs. In the end, it's up to personal preference, but a little guidance never hurt.

Yes and no. Is this child responsible enough to have a paint ball gun or will she be out shooting neighbor's cars and other kids??? Will her parent(s) be the exclusive holder of the paintball gun unless they know she will be in an area, with the proper gear, and is able to be responsible enough to use it appropriately??? I myself wouldn't buy my 14 year old son a paintball gun even though he seems responsible. I say find another gift or even consult her parents before investing in a paintball gun (I would do that first or you could really upset them if they don't want their daughter having that type of item). Trust me - I see too many younger kids in my area who get paintball guns and misuse them.

My kids just got into all this paintball stuff. My youngest is 15. They went outside and played with other people. All day. Exercise, fresh air, socializing- in a good way. I would go for it. I would add buy her the safety stuff too, full helmet, vest, gloves, baggy camo pants--it really hurts with tight jeans on. Don't forget a good pair of shoes or boots, nip those twisted ankles in the bud. Oh, and some tylenol and Myoflex, those unused muscles are going to complain.
