I think 2001 is a better Kubrick film.
The famous cut, the haunting use of music (contrasting against the lack of dialogue) and the beautiful cinematography of 2001 are classic Kubrick.
For me the strength of A Clockwork Orange (Alex's odd, violent and intense world) is in writing of Anthony Burgess.

it has to be A Clockwork Orange, but then again 2001 space odyssey comes a mighty close second, It all depends on which film you really think contains the most genius

"The Shining"

Okay, maybe not THE greatest. I mean, The Exorcist and Psycho and a few others are hard to pass up, but The Shining is way up there.

It is, however, by far the best Stephen King story that has been made into a movie.
It's better than The Stand,
better than Pet Cemetery (if not quite as scary),
better than Cujo,
better than The Green Mile,
better than Dolores Claiborne,
better than Stand By Me (just barely, though),

and YES, it's better than The Shawshank Redemption (shut up, it's better).

I read a while ago that Stanley Kubrick was sorting through novels at his home trying to find one that might make a good movie, and from the other room, his wife would hear a pounding noise every half hour or so as he threw books against the wall in frustration.

Finally, she didn't hear any noise for almost two hours, and when she went to check and see if he had died in his chair or something (I tell this with all due respect, of course),

she found him concentrating on a book that he had in his hand, and the book was The Shining.
And thank God, too, because he went on to convert that book into one of the best horror films ever.

I prefer A Clockwork Orange.

I prefer 2001 because Clockwork is a little too ultra-violent for me. I feel like I have been through an ordeal after watching it. Both are very very good.

I like Full Metal Jacket and The Shining too. Barry Lyndon is beautiful. Kubrick was a genius.

I think that Barry Lyndon was an absolute triumph for Kubrik. The story (by William Makepeace Thackery) and the costumes are outstanding. Personally I think Ryan O'Neil stinks as an actor but he was superb in his role as Barry Lyndon/Redmond Barry.

Kubrik's first movie (Paths of Glory) was actually based on a rtue event during WWI. Finally...Dr. Strangelove was another good one that was a keeper.
I never really got into "2001" and I enjoyed Clockwork Orange because of its wry humor at the governments answer to rehabilitation of violent criminals...who ended up becoming police officers (his gang members).

2001 was so advanced for its time that even Star Trek or Star Wars have no advantage over it. Stanley Kubrick's vision of space and how we evolved was one of the most fascinating movies ever. Its almost as though he had a forsight to the future. I have seen this movie over 30 odd times and knowing that the movie is over 30 yrs old you have to be in awe of the man as a Dierctor. Clockwork Orange was about a group of thugs who relished the Ideal of intimidating and use force to get their thrills. The rape scene was horrendous and the way the rape was committed...the irony of the movie was where the main character played by Malcolm McDowell finally got his just desserts...it was one of the moments where I cheered for the disabled guy who gave as good as he got from the thugs who raped his wife and almost kicked him to death whilst dancing to the song of Singing in the Rain. The best out of these two has to be 2001 especially to people who see the world improving for the better of mankind.
