I, too, have created a new web site in September, and have gone through this process. Yahoo directed me to go to their web hosting control panel, and click on the tab "promote" to find their promotion tools and others, some free, others come with a cost, such as charging for each time a person clicks on your ad. Also, go to the edit button on whatever system you used to create the site, if it is SiteBuilder, the edit button, under PAGE PROPERTIES, put in the "meta tags" the crawlers will search for; the more hits on that particular page, the more it will pick up. I also found if you are published on whatever topic or product you are selling, attach a tag line to it, and whenever that page is read, it will also be hit, and if they click onto your page, that will boost your ratings on the search engines. You can also list your ad for free in local listings for your area, or submit it for consideration, for a fee, to Yahoo Sponsored search. However, I believe there is no guarantee they will accept it. There is more on marketing into and search engines on their site, but, you can also check Metaspy on Metacrawler.com, to see common search terms, and include those terms on your site. Good luck with your listing.

Submit your site to a search engine then wait. It won't take a day or two for your site to appear.

I read that it takes a while for the search engines to update their cache so patience is everything.

I think more hits also helps to improve your site listing but i am not sure.
