I recently got an A. Avicularia (pink toed tarantula). This is my first tarantula. Consequently all I have is just the small pet cage that the store sold me with the spider, and a couple of crickets that are in the cage, sponge with water, shallow bottle cap with water, and a small lightweight garden pot. All that it's doing lately is just hanging on the side and doing nothing else. It hasn't eaten yet, but there are some mummified crickets that were in the cage that it had been staying in. What kind of equipment do I need to buy for my new fuzzy friend to live comfortably?

Avicularias are arboreal, tropical tarantulas that require fairly high humidity, but having conditions TOO damp will general mold, which will clog the tarantula's book lungs. LOOSE the sponge! Tarantulas do NOT drink from sponges, no matter what the kid at the pet store told you! Sponges are prime breeding grounds for bacteria and mold which will kill your tarantula! A clean shallow water dish is fine. I mist my own Avics once or twice a week with a small spray bottle, and they do just fine. Also be aware that for weeks, sometimes months, prior to moulting, most tarantulas will go "off-feed" and tend to be very lethargic, and this is normal. Tarantulas are not typically very active animals, anyway. I've got over 50 myself, and I don't see much activity with any of them! The link will be a great place to research pet tarantulas and keeping other arachnids, though, and will answer specific questions you have about them.

This a jungle spider and require reasonably warm enviroment 75F to 85F with about 60% humidity. They need live food because they hunt movement. Brown crickets are better than black because they are less aggresive. Only put two or three crickets in at a time. The vivarium will only need cleaning out about once a month because this spider likes to make a complicated web home in the corner of it vivarium. The shop should have given you a care sheet,

I would be willing to bet that your buddy is just fine. Tarantulas don't need a whole lot to be confy. Just make sure that his temperature in the cage is where it should be (maybe if he is cold it can affect his movement). Good luck!

This species is also very airborial so i would get at least a 5 gallon tall to keep him in. any added cork bark will be readily used for climbing. if you ever see mold in your t's cage then make sure it is cleaned imediatly.

Mine doesn't move around much, either. I've had her four years, and she does what she wants, when she wants.
