I have two great big healthy sons and I started the older one on baby cereal at one month of age and then at two months veggies and then three months fruits and four the baby meats. My younger one he was a different story since by the time he was one week he was wanting to finish off 8 ozs of formula every 2 hours. so at one week he started eatting the baby rice cereal and with a spoon. You just have to remember one thing when ever giving your baby something new to eat make sure you only have introduced that one new food during a five day period to make sure that they are not allergic to it . If you try various things all at the same time and the baby has a reaction you wont know which food caused the reaction. All this new stuff about not feeding babies food for the first 6 months of thier lives is a bunch of bull. From the begining of time mothers gave thier babies food that they ground up since in the begining there was no baby food nor all this fancy formula. I had both my boys off of formula at 3 months and on nonfat milk along with thier daily baby vitamins since they were eating foods already but I preferred to give them gerbers until they were about 7 months and then I started to mash everything myself being careful that stuff didnt have salt and stuff like that. My youngest one used to love enchuritos that they used to sell at taco bell many moons ago when he was only like 9 or 10 months. If you look at kids now days and kids a few years back before all this no food for a year business you will notice that the kids 25 years ago were alot stronger and healthier and had less medical problems. My kids were never sick. If your son does alright with eating yes it is ok to feed him but before introducing any new foods give him five days for each new food. Since he is just starting to eat foods I would maybe stick with gerber for awhile since it is smooth and easy to go down until he gets a feel for it. I am curious why you would of put the farley rusks in with his bananas. Also remember that to much bananas will constipate the little guy and you should always start out with the veggies first because if they get a taste for the sweet stuff you are going to have problems getting him to eat his veggies try something like squash first . You can also give him the baby rice cereal which is the easiest for them to digest. remember 5 days for each new food and veggies first or you will be sorry.

Oh god - this is a Q likely to start up the great debate of when to start your baby on solids - everyone who answers will no doubt give you different advice - some will say no no no - you CAN'T start them on solids before 6 months - others will say - gosh 5 months - thats late to be starting them etc etc - there doesn't seem to be a right answer with regards to weaning your baby. You ask is it ok? If baby has eaten the banana and rusks and had no reaction - then fine, it was ok. Th only person who can say when they're ready for solids is baby - and if you \start them too soon - they'll tell you (they'll spit it out, vomit it up or else it'll pour out the other end!!).

Many babies start solids @ 5 months because many babies are READY at 5 months - the government guidelines may say 6months - but these are only guidelines based on an average baby - some NEED solids earlier, others won't until 7-8months - it really does depend on baby.

A few tips to share regarding feeding...

Baby rice is the easiest thing to start baby on because it is a smooth consistency and, when mixed with breast or formula milk, it tastes familiar to them. This should be fed once a day until they seem use to it. Once they're familiar with feeding then you can start to introduce fruit and veg (purreed) - this can be thinned with milk and/or cooled boiled water. Mahed up banana is a great favourite - as no doubt you've already found. I agree that you should introduce 1 food at a time to check for alergies - maybe try banana for a day or 2 before introducing something else. Rusks I think are fine to thinken baby food - check the packet - if that says from 4 months - then it's fine.

Good luck with feeding. Out of interest - what made you start weaning when you did, and how much milk is baby consuming per day?? I ask because my boy is 22weeks and we started on the rice last week. We're just going to start veg and fruit this week - so it's good to compare to people at the same stage

If this is the first time you fed him solids, you should be giving him only one new food at a time. If you give more than one new thing at a time and he has a reaction to something, you won't know which food it was. Introduce new foods no more often than once every 5 days.

Bananas are a great first food. Just keep in mind that solids are mostly for fun and practice. Breastmilk or formula will still need to make up most of his diet at this age.

your suppose to start your baby off with rice cereal mixed with breast milk or formula. at about 4 months, or when your baby doubles his birth weight. At about 6 month you can give him baby food. Baby food is the best cuz it doesn't have any chemicals or added sugar. just bananas and water. its healthier for them.. when you start giving him baby food take it slowly. one kind at a time. after three days you can assume they wont develop a food allergy. when introducing a new food its very important not to give 2 new foods at the same time that way you will know if an allergy strikes what hes allergic to. Take it slowly. His body might not be able to digest the foods your giving him. if he cant. he may loose weight, because the food just sits in his belly and he'll feel full. Just give him some rice cereal and go from there. talk to his dr. on the next visit. or call the office.. good luck

My Dr gave me this advice: At 4 months start with cereal and fruits. Give one at a time for at least 4 days to check for any allergies. At 5 months add veggies one at a time and then 6 months he can have meats. (This is all baby food from jars of course) Making your own baby food is good too but there are some foods you should avoid. I got this from iVillage:

Foods for Babies to Avoid

Honey should never be offered to a baby under one year of age, due to the risk of botulism.

Citrus or berry fruits and juices should not be offered until your baby is a year old.

Sugar, artificial sweeteners, salt or spices are unnecessary and should not be added to your baby's food.

Beets, turnips and dark green veggies, such as spinach, kale, broccoli and turnip greens should not be given to a baby under a year of age. They have too many nitrates for babies.

Fried foods

If your baby is showing insterest in foods then that is fine, and the food you are giving him is healthy. Just make sure that the peices you give him arent to big. But you are doing fine. I remember that i started to give my baby table foods when he was around that old and know he is healthy and running around and getting into stuff. So dont worry.

Start with cereals and basic veggies like green beans and sweet potatoes. Always call your doctor when in doubt.
