Defiantly Check the pilot light if its an older model furnace. If not it could be that the thermocouple has gone out. The thermocouple unit is relatively easy to change out Go to your Local Home Depot, Lowe's whatever and talk to someone in the major appliance section. They should be able to help you out with this.

If the thermocouple isn't working then the pilot light will not light. This is a safety device and thermcouples are known to go out. Very easy to change but it varies from unit to unit. Hope this helps

It's Either Roll out Switch Or Limit Switch. Have You Checked The Filter? It may Be Clogged. If It Is The Filter Take Old One Out Turn Off at Thermostat Leave off For about 1/2 Hour Then Turn It Back On And Don't Forget to Get A New Filter If It's a roll out Switch Call A Professional.

The flue pipe is probably sooted up causing the furnace not to vent properly. That will cause the high limit switch to trip from over heating. Most high limits have to be reset manually but it is imperrative that you find out why it tripped before using the furnace! It could be a lot of other things that a heating and a/c teck can fix. The most important thing is your safety. If I was not familiar with furnaces, I would opt for my life ond call a pro.

Is the gas turned on? Do you need to have the pilot light lit?
