I hate to say it, but "flags" was no Private Ryan by a long shot.
It ripped off the present day retiree soldier reliving the past,
the same thema as ryan flashing back. How much genius does
it take to cut from a retiree to the war? The same tired editing we've seen a million times, flashing back and froth in time.

The acting by the soldiers(mostly unknown actors) was pretty
awful. All one-dimensional characters, with the same One liners
we've heard in about 500 war movies since WW2.

The actor that played the Indian "ira hayes" was really sickening
and one-dimensional as well. Just had the same unchangeing aggravated, remorseful look the whole time. They could have had him laugh at least once. In the "real-life" pictures at the end he was smiling, so they could have fleshed out his character a bit.

The movie was totally predictable and one-dimensional, like
"Pearl Harbor".
At least Pearl Harbor wasn't touted as a four-star movie, and
had a decent star in it(Ben Affleck

BTW, don't you think Clint Eastwood might be the most overrated director as well?
I mean, was Mystic river and million dollar baby really that good?
I would say that "Unforgiven" was a classic
though....I'll give him credit for that, anyway.

marty K, you didn't miss anything.
It pretty much sucked except for the battle
scenes.......as one-dimensional was any propaganda hollywood 1940's stuff....
actually some 40's stuff was MORE
fleshed out.
May be the most overrated movie this year.
hard to believe Mr. Spielberg was involved
in this stinker.

I don't think Ben Afflack is a great actor, by any means, but he certainly doesn't
suck. I understand some people don't like the guy, but he's okay.
Honestly, I don't particularly care for Afflack,
which just goes to show how awful I thought "Flags of our fathers" was.
Afflack was decent in "daredevil" and "Dazed and confused" though.
Again, the guy is a bit arrogant, which
makes some people hate him, especially
that smarmy "Project Greenlight" Indie movie foundation he runs with Matt Damon.

Real war is boring, it's waiting forever and then a few moments of terror. Even when you are in a fire-fight, it takes place a lot slower than it does in the movies. Even then you go on automatic pilot, do what your told and squeeze out three rounds at a time maximum. You are like a zombie and probably are a boring person like Ira Hayes. Full automatic doesn't exist on the rifles in real war. You have to save your ammunition. Some soldiers don't even use the three round burst. The machine guns you see on TV like the AK 47 are great at close range and will punch a hole through light cover, but the object is to not to expose yourself unecessarily to enemy fire. That's why Nato weapons and American weapons are better. No, I think Private Ryan was inaccurate. You set up a field of fire with your company as you are trained to do and take the ground. Flags is more accurate.

Could you have done it any better?! Until you try it yourself, I believe you have no right to say anything. Maybe an "I didn't care for this particular film" would have been sufficient, but other than that, you just sound like another person who feels the need to complain about it, just for the sake of complaining... I realize there is freedom of speech, but too many people take it too far...

I've heard that political correctness was involved in the movie, and that it wasn't the real McCoy. That's why I didn't go to it.
