What would be good indications that you are in for a bad or rough winter???

1. Looking out your second story window and seeing snow on the ground that is level with the sill.
2.Seeing a politician with his hands in his own pockets.
3. Seeing bees wearing yellowjackets.

Seriously though, people say that when you see a lot of squirrels it means they are out foraging for food that won't be available for the winter, as animals sense the weather.

I heard something such as bees or hornets building their nests in higher places or an early fall (like all the leaves falling really early)

The weather service bases their predictions on ocean currents (El Nino) and the jet stream. They also use historical data. However these are predicitons--no one really knows until it gets here.
