My landlady is reluctant to pay for this, even though the law is very clear that it's her responsibility. (But the fines for violators are too low to motivate her.) I'm hoping she'll be more willing if she knows she can recoup her costs by filing an insurance claim. Any ideas on other ways she can cover her costs (gov't programs, etc.) are much appreciated. At this point taking her to court is not an option I'm willing to consider. Thanks!

Unfortunately not. Insurance pays for damages caused by a sudden and accidental loss. Infestations of bugs, rodents, insects, etc. are not considered sudden nor accidental and are part of "maintaining" the premises. Take matters into your own hands and have your place fumigated by a professional exterminator or a diy fogger. Make sure you caulk any holes in the walls, floors etc. I lived off campus during my college years in the south and found myself in a similar situation. I purchased some window screen fabric and covered over all the heat registers, installed a sweep at the bottom of my door and bought a box or two of Raid Foggers in the turqoise blue box and enjoyed many a bug free, late night study session. Go to the nearest drug store and buy a couple of cans of lice spray..take off all the bed clothes and wash in hot water encluding pillows..then spray all the beds with lice spray making sure to spray both sides and the 4 side walls of the beds spray them good then when dry take a vaccum to the mattress. you might need to repeat as necesary...dont forget to spray the box springs and the carpet around the beds..
lice spray is about $5 a can..dont fool with your land lord no more you need to take care of this problem before it gets out of control.Bed bugs can take over your whole house if you dont put a stop to it now...you will need one can of spray for each bed and the couches..So what if you spend $25 to get rid of the problem if you dont have the money call family services or your doctor they can also help with the problem...

while you're renting, then it may be terrific to touch the owner and clarify the situation and tell him which you filed a police document. The assets vendors coverage that the owner has covers the domicile,despite if he has a deductible and that's ususally greater than the value of the window. yet you are the tenant so there should not be a difficulty for you.

I don't think the insurance covers it but if she provided the bed then it seems she is responsible to get rid of the bed bugs.

i seriously doubt it and unless you rented the bed along with the apartment i don't believe a landlord would be held responsible,they are not regular bugs like roaches or ants or waterbugs;they come from fungus
