YOU NEED TO QUICKLY GLANCE OVER YOUR SHOULDER TO CHECK BLIND SPOT.

HOWEVER, IF YOU'RE A GOOD DRIVER, YOU SHOULD BE AWARE OF ALL VEHICULAR ACTIVITY AROUND YOU!

Both, because if you just rely on your mirrors, there is a blind spot, so if you look over shoulder you'll know if someone is next to you that the mirrors won't pick up.

The safest option would of course be, to first check your mirrors, then have a quick glance to the side, over your shoulder, as is mentioned in a previous answer, there are blind spots when just using mirrors.

When passing on the left, your rear view and right mirrors have blind spots. Keep this in mind when someone is passing you. They may not be aware of how close you are as they pull into the right lane, in front of you. Slow, and allow them in.

Truckers often flash their headlights as a signal that they are clear to pull in. I do this myself, having driven an RV.

Good peripheral vision should help with a quick glance to the right, allowing a view of the right rear of your car. Eye glasses reduce peripheral vision.

You can usually have full view on the left with both the rear view and left mirrors.

There is always a blind spot, so rear view mirror then side mirrors and finally over the shoulder. It's not yourself it's other drivers you have to watch for, motorbikes especially can be up behind you from the time you've looked in your mirror until manoveur and once your committed it's too late. Always check all three as above is my advice.

Eh, you should always look over your shoulder. The mirrors have gigantic blind spots big enough to hide a house. The exception being trucks-trailer combinations. Lookin over my shoulder in one will only let me see into the sleeper, or the "smokestack". Tis why they have the concave mirrors. (and the lean/look method)

When driving on a motorway the safest thing to do would to use both i.e check your mirrors first then look over your shoulder. It's better to be safe then sorry.

Mirrors unless pulling out from a slip road or a service station. Too dangerous to look over your shoulder at 70mph.

Use the mirror's mainly, but a glance over the shoulder can make sure you aren't missing a car or motorbike in your blind spot.

you should be aware what is around you anyway!
but its always best to be safe and have a quick look in that spot that you cannot see, AKA the 'blind spot'!!!
or get one of those little blind spot mirrors and attach to your mirror
otherwise dont be so lazy and have a quick look over your shoulder
