I am 5 weeks preg, but the ultra sound could not find a heart beat. Also the only other symptoms I have are slight tenderness of breasts and queasiness.I also have a bloated stomach .
Is this cause for concern ? can this turn to a miscarriage ?

I don't think they can pick up anything on ultra sound until 6 weeks as they are so tiny then. Have they referred you for another scan in a couple of weeks?
I wouldn't be concerned at the moment just think positive.
Good luck x

Why did you have a 5-week ultrasound?

I had a trans-vag. one at what I thought was 5-weeks (because of some light bleeding) and they didn't see a heartbeat. All they saw was the "blastocyst" and it still had a yolk sac attached. I was obviously VERY worried that my baby wasn't developing normally!! But the heart only divides and starts beating at 5-weeks. A couple weeks later I had another ultrasound and all was well. (And I now have a perfectly healthy 11-month old baby girl.)

Based on those 2 early ultrasounds, the doctors told me throughout my ENTIRE pregnancy that my dates were off... that I wasn't counting from the "first day of my last period" like you're supposed to, or that I was wrong about that date, but I KNOW what day I got pregnant, and I was 100% positive about my last period.

There's no possible way my husband's little swimmers could've lived that long if the Doctor's date of conception was correct. No doctor could ever explain the discrepancy... (They thought they were smarter than me, and would never admit they could be wrong, but hey... I was THERE at the time of conception and I know when I'd had sex before and after :-)

What I'm saying is if you're counting correctly from FDLP maybe your baby's not developed to the 5-week average yet even though you know it's been 5 weeks. They'll ALL say it's not possible, science and early ultrasounds are never wrong, but it sure was for me!!

A colleague of mine experienced the same thing... her husband was out of town when they said her baby had been conceived based on fetal assessments... (don't even think it... to see the baby there's no doubting for a second that it's his :-)

In other related heartbeat news... If there aren't any complications (bleeding, cramping etc.) then my doctor said she wouldn't even try before 9 weeks with a doppler.

She said the baby's so small and in such a big space that at that point that she can't always find the heartbeat and if she checks and doesn't find it then the mothers get worried and stressed out so she'd rather wait until the next appointment if everything's going fine.

When I was bleeding early on the doctors told me that at that point there was nothing I could do to prevent a miscarriage if that's the path I was headed down. If it's meant to be it's meant to be.

It might be some small consolation to know that when my husband and I told this story to several of our friends most of them laughed and said that in their wife's first pregnancies they too ended up in the ER for spotting and all but 1 had healthy babies.

I'm not a doctor, and you should always take it seriously and check it out, but IMO I think early spotting in pregnancy may be becoming more normal than the doctor's let on because women know (reliably) that we're pregnant so much earlier now.

I had very few symptoms too and never even got queasy until about 9-10 weeks.

Good luck and take care.

Sweetie, I am afraid that the other lady who answered your question is correct. You will have to talk this one over with your doctor. He or she is the best one to answer your question.
What I would like to tell you is DO NOT panic! Do not assume the worst. It seems to me that 5 weeks is very early to find the heartbeat even with an ultrasound. I know that they do it all the time but I believe that it is possible for the baby to be in an odd position and for that reason they cannot detect the heartbeat.
I am sure that if it were considered some awful sort of news, your doctor would have called and talked to you. Basically with things like this "no news is good news". They are always in a hurry to tell you bad things!
As far as your lack of symptoms I would not worry about that. Each pregnancy is different and there is a lot of variation in what is considered normal.
Keep positive thoughts and you will be in my prayers.
Bright Blessings
Lady T~

Typically you want to be able to see a heartbeat by seven weeks. At five weeks along it can be very hard to find, especially if they do an abdominal ultrasound rather than transvaginal, so don't worry about that.

There are no universal symptoms of early pregnancy. Queasiness, upset stomach, and breast tenderness are all normal, and the lack of other symptoms is not a bad sign. Everybody is different. Take care, and good luck!

I just went for my first ultrasound at 6 weeks and they did see a heartbeat but at first it was hard to find. The tech told me that it can make a big difference from one day to the next on what you can see. I've had similar symptoms to you as far as the queasiness and breast tenderness. I wouldn't worry just yet. Talk to your doctor about your concerns. Maybe they'll have you go for another ultrasound in a few weeks.

Have you had a vaginal ultra sound? When I was pregnant with my second child that was the only way they were able to find her heart beat. If your doctor wasn't concerned then you shouldn't be either.

What did the dr say??????? Did he schedule another test... I have a friend whose gf went through the same thing. not to scare you but i did end up in a misscarry. But every one is different. Did you talk to your gyn about this???? I feel so bad for you. The not knowing thing really sucks.. you have systems that's good.. If they just go away id contact my doctor immediately. Id call the doctors office and talk with the nurse that's there. tell her of your concerns maybe she can give you the answers your looking for.. Good luck and God bless.....

5 weeks is VERY early. Usually you CANNOT pick up heartbeat from the u/s until 6-7 weeks, and only if the u/s tech is very experienced.
