In all the latest articles about emo, journalists are describing emo kids as having black hair, dark eyeliner, rock-band t-shirts, and a preoccupation with misery. Doesn't this description already cover goths? If not, how are emo kids different from goths?

the difference between emo and goth....
emos are really emotional, thats what "emo" is short for. originally, emo was just a type of music, but then people started making the emo label, theres def a lot of black involved but also "nerd"ish clothes, like preppie sweaters and horn rimmed glasses. many wear tight pants, too.
GOTHIC is different. yeah, yeah, yeah, they wear a lot of black, ok?
but goths see things with more beauty than other people can. theyre more open about things. they can find beauty in things other people find dark or morbid. originally, they didnt have shops like hot topic that had all the clothes that they could wear, they just shopped anywhere to find clothes that were different from what everyone else wore because they wanted to be original and different. people look at goth these days and see freaks or mistake them for emos. goths are not emos, and NOT freaks, ok?? and the goth stereotype really pisses me off.

Goth is more a lifestyle - you can dress in black, have white faces and dark make up, be interested in wicca and magic, but not necessarily the music. The image of goth led the music, where as emo is more about the music. Emo also seems to be a progression of goth - ie loads of goths are older and emo kids are just that, kids. Emo is also led by the bands and the music and the look follows that. Goth bands tend to be Sisters of Mercy, Fields of the Nephilim, Nick cave types - a lot more swirling guitars and anthemic orchestral scores, while emo tends to be faster and thrashier, if you know what I mean. Emo is a new genre, goth is an old genre.

Neko has the best answer to give you here. Emo is a fad, that in my opinion already passed. In middle school when emo was popular. Anyone who went with it was either trying to fit in with the new trend, or wanting attention. Goth is undergroundedly dead. Anyone who talks about goth these days don't know what thier talking about, and wouldn't know real goth if it bit them in the **** and crawled up there for hybernation. no offense. Emo was for the majority. And for those who still exsist, are probably the real deal and weren't in it for the attention, popularity, etc. Unless emo has transformed into normal average kids who just so happen to wear hottopic black clothes. Then I guess :D (i think it has) Oh yea. Goths hate hottopic :3 Got ruined when all that mainstream stuff started coming in to keep the money flowing. Changed their audience appeal to what was in.

I dont know that much about either, but wanted to pass comment, I think they look brill.They put loads of imagination into what they wear, and have the bottle to wear it. I dont find them at all threatening, or offensive, as I do with some other bunches of teens. I put this in because of some other comments that had been made. I will be interested in the answer, so will watch this one. Cheers!

goths are cynical losers who dress in black and listen to depressing music; emos are whiny losers who dress in black and wear excessive make-up, and their music is slightly more depressing
goths are darker and are really making an effort to be scary, whereas emos are emotionally fragile, impressionable kids
