In general, Freud's theory of psychosexual development has been largely dismissed by most of the psychological community. Infact, the only text of his most psychologists read is Civilization and its Discontents. To say that human sexual development occurs in precisely these stages at precisely these times is a tad ridiculous. Also, the Oedipal/Electra conflict that occurs in the Phallic stage is particularly incredulous.
However, Freud was the first to talk about infantile sexuality, which was a breakthrough for Victorian culture. Also, his general theory of psychoanalysis is still practiced by many in the field of psychology.

The fact that he focused on childhood was a big positive, however the emphasis on sexuality was excessive. To me the telling point is that he resisted such labels when referring to himself (the classic moment when his students pointed out that he always chewed on/smoked a cigar and he replied 'sometimes a cigar is just a cigar' This is not at all what he would have said if a client had come to see him and chewed on a cigar.

If you find some things about Freud appeal you, look at the theories of Adler or Carl Jung. They take Freudian ideas and make them more... palatable.

OK!!!! Ice Berg Theory: Freud believe the "tip of the iceberg" of our human psychology was implemented by our environments at a young age. The pro's of this are: The paleolithic societies created in our minds can be understood and manipulated to direct our cognitive research abilities in a positive direction. The Con's are: The fail-state effort of rational logic in a fundamental psychological society effortlessly breaths confluence into our states of awareness.

It was a start - but a lot of his work was based on a small, nonrepresentative case sample. 5 or 6 cases.

Baloney. I'm a psychology graduate. Freud was a cocaine and opium addict, which probably contributed to his delusions.

Freud was extraordinarily adept at describing his own neuroses as though it were the norm.
