You can talk to them. They can usually understand more than they can say. Use a lot of inflection in your voice.

Also, you could try teaching them baby sign language.

I have 2 sons, now 15 and 16 years old.I was a single Mother from the time they were born until they were 3 and almost 5 years old.I never talked "baby talk" to them. They were talked to as if they were ALOT older and the end ressult was-they didn't baby talk to me.We still watched cartoons and did the normal things a child does, but when you talk to them like an older child,it seems as if they grow to repeat the things that are said to them.{NO CURSE WORDS}.They learned the "magic words" were "please, thank you and eventually "yes Mam,No Mam and the polite ways to speak to someone."It actually works! The older they got,the more intelligent conversations we have. They are now respectful, smart young men.I know there are times when they get "a boo-boo" and you grab them and instinct tells you to baby talk, but keep the faith. All will turn out for the best. Not speaking to them like babies made them alot more understanding in school.Of course, you will have to explain some meanings of words, but int the long run.IT WILL WORK!

You speak to them the same as you would any other child, just using simpler words. I've never resorted to baby talk with children because that can stunt their language development. Be expressive and use body language to convey an idea. (If something is big, hold out your arms to show how big something is.)

Children like it when you come down to their level. It makes them feel like they're equals. So get down on the floor to where they are and interact with them at eye level. Eye contact, a pat on the back, a hug, the smile of delight, and the shared laugh-out-loud of sheer pleasure are the best and most direct signals of communication.

Kids under 2 usually have a short attention span, so don't give long drawn detail things for them to do. Praise them for the little things they do right and encourage them for the new things they are trying to learn. Be patience because little people make plenty of baby size mistake. Hold good conversations, make play time interesting with age appropriated toys. Any always make sure your little one know you love him/her.

in case you want you fiance and commit to sense free then sweetie, sense free! existence is too short to rigidity about what people say or imagine...even kinfolk. YOU sense free and stay your existence for you and your fiance. your relatives will come round even as they see you're extremely chuffed. Sounds to me like your 'christian' sister-in-regulation is slightly jealous and has forgotten a number of the commandments. do not hardship about her.

do you want to learn the child's language or teach him yours? speaking slowly with actions, like talking to pets will help him associate the sound with the action.children are very intelligent and can understand much earlier than most adults think.

You speak to them n a clear voice, trying not to use 'baby talk', slang, or words with too many syllables.
You should always try to face them when you speak, and your face should show the emotion you are trying to convey. Smile if you are happy, frown if you are sad.

Speak softly to your little boy and beat him when he sneezes.
He only does it to annoy, because he knows it teases.
