Tune-ups arent all that bad and sometimes you can find shops that are having special deals on them. Most common tune-ups are new spark-plugs, check or change spark-plug wires, check and/or change the air flow filter if your car has one. Changing you fuel filter if need be. And some stations will even change your oil, top up your fluids and give your engine an all over inspection check. Take the said above and make a check list. When you go to the shop just tell them what you want done. Most important get the spark plugs and oil changed and let them inspect the rest. As of cost that depends on what you want done.
Dont be afraid to sit around the shop and watch what they are doing to your car. Some jobs ( I aint sayin all) like to try to rip you out of money especially if you are a woman and/or dont have any know how about cars.

Really depends on the car (age and manufactuerer) and what they recommend as far as maintenence is concerned. Your owners manual will have what the car maker expects you to do per the mileage on your car. Most newer cars don't get big services (plugs, wires, etc...) untill 60k miles or even higher sometimes. The more mileage usually the higher cost (i.e a 60K mile service on a Mercedes SL500 could cost $600+ and that doesn't include changing spark plugs)

New spark plugs and maybe new wires depends on the mileage of the car and what make and model. My husband has a '97 Camaro so he changes the wires and the plugs, but my mom has a '00 Protege so she only needed new plugs. Depends on your car. Take your car to the nearest Auto Parts store and have them check the computer they'll let you know.
