Eye contact is very important. Beginning with children, can they look you in the eye when they have fibed or done something they are being questioned for? No, their eyes will always avert from your eyes. It is different with adults. They will either stare, careful not to avert but they have this look in their eye that tells you the story. You can also tell alot by looking into the eyes . Some are not confident and cannot maintain eye contact but for brief moments before looking down.
I have met many people over my lifetime where the eyes told the story, ended potential friendships or made excellent friends. They are the opening to the soul.

You eyes has the biggest influence on the way you look. The most expressive part of your being.
If you keep a bad / mean stare, how do you think you'd please the person in front of you.
If you're eyes are tired and droppy in an interview or meeting/seminar for example, how do you suppose your interviewer would think? or how the speaker would feel?

It depends on cultural upbring. Americans like eye contact. It shows trust and friendliness. Other cultures, eye contact could mean aggressiveness.

Personally - it weighs heavy on my first opinion of someone. If you can not look at me straight in the eye while having a conversation, I instantly have a bad impression of you.

My Dad always told me "you can't trust someone who doesn't look you in the eye". To me when a person wont look you in the eye means they have something to hide.
