Totally unknown. Scientists trained a telescope on a "dark" portion of the sky and kept it there for a long time. The result was that numerous galaxies show up, each with millions of stars. The dark area - an area that appears dark to the naked eye, was no larger than what you would see if you looked through a drinking straw. We know so little!
