Yes, I've kept a diary since 1974, and before that for a few months in my teens. No, I'd never let anyone read it, but I did type out some excerpts for my son, to answer some questions about his early childhood.

My teenage diary was really self-conscious - I'd just finished reading Ann Frank's diary - and I was writing with a view to being read. Just before I started my adult diary, I read a hint against self-consciousness which I've found really helpful.

When you start, write something on the very first page that is so disgusting, so personal or so embarrassing that you know you would never, ever let anyone read it. From that moment you are free, because you will guard that diary with your life, and ensure nobody will ever read it - so you can write whatever you like.

I must admit I am beginning to wonder what my grandchildren will make of it, but I'll be dead by the time they get to it, and they will be adults, so they can worry about it.

I used to keep a diary during my teenage years. I always found that writing a diary was like talking to someone when no one else will listen to you.

A couple of years ago, my cousin was unhappy during her time at school and she always told me that she hated her life. She always told me how lucky i was tha i never felt her pain and depression. Little did she know that i also went through this stage during my schools years and most people do! Anyway, she didn't believe me so i let her read my diaries. And that was that!!

After knowing that she wasn't the only one who was unhappy during school, she decided to change things. And now she is happier and enjoying her sixth form studies =)

So what I'm trying to say: yes i let someone read my diary if it was to help the person, otherwise no as diaries can be very personal.

Sorry about the long answer!

I've tried to write a diary several times. I used to write some for a couple of years and one of them is rather a scrapbook than a diary. I did it before I'd ever heard about the word or the genre "scrapbook". I still have it. Through the course of time I tried to write different kinds of diaries but I always stopped as I felt I had nothing to put down in them. Though I haven't given up on it completely yet.

I used to write diary when I was girl. From age 9 till 16 I believe, and when I read them some time later I found that most of things in them were sort of embarrassing. All that trying to be grown up as soon as possible was unbearable so I got rid of them, I couldn't even imagine someone else reading it.
When I became a Christian I've decided to write down some unbelievable things that happened, or hardship that I went through, so that one day, while reading it I can make sense of details that if not written down would have been forgotten and I wouldn't mind if someone would read that.

Yes, I've always been writing in journals. I have an open diary at the Open Diary...an Open Online Diary. You can make your entries private or you can let them be read by the public who can leave you notes in every public entry...you just do not publish personal information and write general stuff and observations.

Yes, I keep a diary/journal. No, I don't let anyone read it, but my sister did read it without my permission a few months back, and there were some hard things in there about her which were true, only she couldn't take me to task about them because that would have been tantamount to admitting that she'd read my diary ...

I am taking excerpts from it for artwork, though.

Yes, I kept a diary for years. I bought ten volumes and started the first one when I was in school. There's everything in there from fights with teachers, crushes on boys, right through to my first jobs, first boyfriend, etc. They contain all my secret and fantasies.
And yes everyone can read them - when I'm dead.

I've written one on and off for years. I would definitely NOT let anyone read it. My thoughts and feelings written sacrilige! It is my private space... it is the only place where if I found someone reading without my permission I would go berserk. Sometimes I've hidden it just in case. They are great places to get your feelings out... Very healing .... Happy writing !
