It usually affects the central nervous system in some way causing a secondary effect such as paralysing the breathing muscle so that you suffocate. That's how curare works in the South American Indians' blow pipes. Mostly they cause such a shock to the central nervous system that it just shuts down, e.g. chug-a-lugging a bottle of liquor.
