Anyone know of a good site that can provide me with ideas for a straight staircase for an ultra modern flat. No spiral!

It's an Australian site, but this does have a large number of options and should give you some ideas:

All the ultra modern staircases I have seen are either cantilevered slabs or suspended from ropes, few of them seem to be user friendly. Most of them seem to be quite unsafe, so keep in mind that it may be your elderly mother or grandmother who may need a handrail, and of course, there may be children who come to visit. Stairs are more than art, they must be safe too. This is worth a trip to an architect (or at least a competent contractor) for the design since so many factors must be considered. This isn't a do-it-yourself job. Check the yellow pages for contractors specializing in staircases.

This is about the most "ultra-modern" straight staircase I have ever seen....

I like the ones which are made up of thick slabs sticking out of the wall, with no support on the other end.

Be careful about bye-laws, some authorities don't allow them if they have no handrails.
