It is your Local Education Authority - the Education Dept can be contacted at the Town or County Hall in most cases.

Local Education Authorities

Each government funded school has the option to choose their own term dates and therefore holidays, these dates have to be approved by local authorities- though very few schools do this. Otherwise dates are set by local education authorities and published up to three years in advance. There can also be a diference during the spring term by the timing of Easter.

Most places this choice goes to the county school boards. However, in some states the state dictates when school can open and how long it can be opened. For example, NC just passed a law saying that our schools cannot start before August 25 and that we cannot go past June 9. It really depends on where you are at.

Your local education authority, which is part of the local council, sets the holiday dates, but the number of days is dictated by government. You can usually just phone.

Good question. It must be down to the local authority because ours are not on half term until next week while most are off this week.

The LEA chooses them, however they can vary from school to school due to teacher training days, this usually means they start a day early or finish a day late though
