active chromatin -- DNA is being transcribed
inactive -- DNA is transcriptionally silent

inactive chromatin is more compact and transcriptional factors cannot access the promoters/enhancers of the genes.

It is in your textbook. Why don't you read it? Most of the DNA in a cell is inactive most of the time. Brain cells do not need the same thing stomach cells need. The DNA which is being transcribed or used is active. It is unwound instead of tightly coiled. Inactive DNA or chromatin is tightly coiled making it smaller.

Heterochromatin is inactive chromatin in which the chromatin is highly coiled and the genes are
in inactive condition.Euchromatin is active in which it is less coiled with active genes.
