How did this reliance on cotton production affect the South's relations with the North as well as socially and morally?

The North had textile mills, the south grew cotton
Law of supply and demand meant that the north had to help protect cotton production

Greetings!

Unlike today, during the colonial period there was an agreed upon separation between personal beliefs and business.
Thus the South producing cotton and shipping it to the mills in the North, and later being shipped abroad was a workable and profitable business arrangement.
With few industries at the time, it was important to have this work.
And, times were different. People who came here seeking freedom for religious persecution were hardly going to criticize some other group from having different moral values.
In fact, as an example William Penn held the rights to the lands in Pennsylvania and Maryland and offered settlement privileges to any Religious and or Political persuasion.
So all that was left to slingshot this country to a successful economic venture, was to have a scheme to use resources transportation and manufacturing of goods for sale.
And that my friend is what the North and the South were able to do for each other.
Keeping that in mind they were able to develop two distinct personalities, as you know. Not until National Politics took hold in this country was there a problem between the two.

Good Luck

The most influencal factor was that in order to keep production up (in the south) the use of slaves was customary which in itself was a political issue (freedom for all) with the north. It also was a means for the north to impose on the southern way of life because most of the mills and the garment industry was mostly located on the east coast, New York being the center.
