I lived in California for over 20 years and just recently moved away. I could tell you an earthquake story or two! However, for basic information, I would advise you to visit the US Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information Center. It is full of information on Nature's Rollercoasters. You can find it right here -----> http://earthquake.usgs.gov/regional/neic/

Also, California has the Office of Emergency Services. They make evacuation and other plans for everything from an earthquake to a possible nuclear attack on one of our many military bases. I'm sure they have tons of information on disaster preparedness. And don't be afraid to email to ask questions, or even call and ask questions. My mother worked for them for years and they are usually thrilled when someone takes an interest in their own safety.
