Haven't heard ANYONE referring to a female as "damsel" outside of a Renaissance Faire setting or SCA recreator's event.
Except for something like "Colonial Dames", can't imagine anyone since the 1920s calling a woman a "dame"---sounds like a REALLY bad script for a high school play!

Its better than being called a "whore" or worse. Dames and damsels is a bit dated. Many women would rather be called miss, ma'am, woman, lady, sweetheart, honey, etc.

I think dame just sounds too old - i get the impression that yo only get refererred to as dame if you were in your fifties plus. Damsel sounds much younger.
