To help maintenance costs, maybe a small cover charge for adults is acceptable but not for under 18s. As a child, I and my friends often went to the museum on wet, cold days and learned a lot. Most museums now are much more interactive and child friendly, this should be encouraged but parents with several children can find the cost prohibitive and this is so sad. Students use museums for research and art work, foreign visitors love to roam around them and the general public too would use the museum for a different 'day out' especially if therre is a good coffee house inside.

In a perfect world no. It's expensive to take families to many museums, and it is a shame that this excludes them. Surely they should be available to everyone.
However, if it comes down to paying to visit or loosing the museum as they cannot cover overheads, then of course they should charge. I think it is important that they keep charges as low as possible rather that charge what they think they can get away with, because they are aimed at a particular market.
As awful as it is, I would not like to spend too much taxpayers money on keeping museums free, as I think things like the NHS, policing and other social projects must come first.

Not if we are British citizens at national museums as all the artefacts belong to the state and therefore the people. Why should we have to pay to see things which are ours anyway? Perhaps pay to go into a private museum to help with the upkeep.

Yes. How else do you think they get money to maintain the museums? You might say the government should pay and that's great but where do you thing the government gets it's money. From taxing you, or your parents depending how old you are.

Of course- I always think at it like this- they need money to keep the place running nice so that we could keep enjoying the beauty of the museums. So dont worry it does kinda stinks but I bet that if you look at it from another angle you will find a different view to apreciate (kinda like art).
Enjoy your museums.

Yes since quite a few museums can only be run by "donations" especially smaller but not the less interesting one's.

Yes; it costs money to run a museum, just like anything else, and the money has to come from somewhere.

Many Museums in London are free anyway! The ones that aren't, sure, I don't think shirt buttons go very far these days in upkeep!

In an ideal world no, but unfortunately you cant run one for free. and im sure grants and subsidies dont cover all of it. if people donated more then some museums wouldn't have to charge.

If you do not pay on the door, you will have to pay via taxation. Relying on the government to addequately fund anything is usually a bad idea.
