If you have a Compass and a sextent you can learn navigation. Using the Compass you can get your longitude by reading where the needle is pointing when the compass is pointed to the North.
Now, focus the Pole Star on your Sextent and read the angle it gives, the sextent hand. That is the latitude.
This is the old system. Now a days if you have a star chart it is possible to navigate by that instead of the Pole star. Pole star is easier since it is always above the N. pole. For other stars you will have to use conversion table.
Now say you start from Dower to Miami. You know the bearing when you start say morning. When dusk falls you take your bearing once or twice or early next morning when the Pole star is visible and keep moving towards your planned route. You can set in a planned path on a map and keep noticing your progress on it.
Nowadays there is Electronic beacons send across to the land where you are sailing to and you can get your bearing reading the reflected wave. Modern days Navigation is by electronic instruments, and very rarely sailors use Sextent and Compass. Also, there is the Global Positioning Satellites which can be used in Navigation. You need only the right equipment. You send a tracking signal from ground and you get your bearing.

Check with your local library. My library offers courses and boater safety and navigation is one of them. Got a yacht club in your area, call and ask them as well.
