Pure maths or stochastic processes. As the other answerer mentioned pure maths is all about proofs and thinking in multiple dimensions. Very esoteric stuff. Stochastic processes is a combination of linear systems theory and statistics/probability theory. Probability is very unintuitive and that's why the subject is difficult.

Algebra, trig, basic calculus are all "easy" and assumed to be basic knowledge when you get to the higher level maths. Sorry for those in high school who think math is difficult, but really it is not compared to university math. If you struggle with high school math please do not punish yourself with university math. The pace is much faster than high school.

I would say Pure Mathematics; this is actually a branch of maths which deals mostly with abstract and discrete feature of mathematics; it comprises of a variety of sub-units like Topology, Number Theory, Rings, Fields, Homeomorphisms, Coding Theory etc in fact it forms the basis of all the other kinds of Mathematical branches by laying down rules called axioms which it has proved beyond reasonable doubts. Thus, it is mostly about proofs in maths... proofs which help us formulate concrete ideas, suprisingly I would say concrete maths is lays somewhere in between Pure Maths and Applied Maths.

As I recollect it from some VERY miserable days in high school....ANYTHING that was on the test in front of me at the time!

But if you wanted a serious answer, recall my husband was moaning **bigtime** about something called "differential equations"--but I'm not sure whether that's more engineering or pure math.

I'd suggest looking at integration and differenciation of roots and squares, always used to scare the living hell out of me that one. Failing that, consider the logical concepts behind dividing by zero or just watch "A Beautiful Mind"
