the safest way to check is have your dr. do it. you really don't want to go poking around inside yourself playing a guessing game with your boby while your preg. the dr will have no problem checking for you. doing it your self or your husband doing it could cause problems. be carful. ask your dr. if its safe to check your self and if so how to do it.

I have felt my non-pregnant cervix. It feels like the tip of your nose. 2 weeks ago (at 35 1/2 weeks) I had a lot of contractions and wanted to make sure I wasn't dilating. When I felt my cervix then it felt so different I almost wasn't sure I was feeling the right thing, but because I knew where to feel I was pretty sure I had found it. The next day I had my appointment and the Dr. checked me. He said I was softening but not dilated. This makes sense becasue it no longer felt like the tip of my nose, and I could not determine an opening...only a dent where the opening will be. To me the softened cervix felt just like all of the rest of the soft, squishy vaginal tissue around it. This weekend (37 1/2 weeks) I have tried to feel my cervix again and either I can't reach far enough or it has become so unidentifiable that I don't recognize it. I really think the key to us non-OB's figuring out what were feeling is knowing what it felt like in the beginning and where to feel. Because at this point I don't think I would've been able to identify anything had I not known. Good luck.

It's so ridiculous that women feel this part of their body is off-limits to anyone but their doctors. If you're gentle you can't hurt anything, and there's less risk of infection than having someone else do it in a germy hospital.

I won't go into the details of how to do it because another poster covered it fairly well, and if you google "self-care cervix" and "self check dilation" lots of info will come up.

I am wondering, though, why you feel the need to have this information in the first place? Level of dilation means next to nothing. You can be 3 cm. dilated for weeks leading up to the birth, or you can be completely closed and not start dilating until the latter part of active labor.

Well the rule is 1 centimeter per finger, but don't try it cause you do not know what you are feeling for and the cervix is not always right there, it could be tilted so you can not feel it. And you do risk the chance of introducing germs even if you wash your hands first that is not enough. Its not worth the risk. I know some women who like to feel the babys head when they are close to birth and they describe it as breathtaking, so ask the doctor and maybe he or she will allow you to do this and tell you the correct way. Good luck...

You are dialated, but when you are no longer in ache then the labour is not relatively energetic or progressing, so regularly they wait, or set off if you're over due. Same factor occurred to me with my little one. I used to be two cm dialated and the surgeon despatched me residence from the steady appointment, and stated to visit the clinic whilst the ache used to be so dangerous I could not take it anymore. I took public transit residence freaking understanding I used to be in labour, I used to be again on the clinic 12 hours later, in A LOT of ache. Good good fortune.

This is easier if you did it when you were TTC, but you can still try during pregnancy.

Make sure your hands are clean and that your nails are well trimmed.

Your cervix will feel kind of firm, like the tip of your nose. If you are starting to efface, then it will feel softer, more like your cheek. Feel for the center of it and you'll find a spot that, if it is still closed, feels like a little dimple. If you are starting to dilate, it will be more of a small circle or hole. That is the os (opening) of your cervix.

It is usually easier to reach to check your cervix yourself if you are sitting on the toilet or standing with one leg elevated. I found that standing with one leg up on the side of the tub seemed to work well.

By going to the doctor and having them check, I would not trust my husband to do this because he wouldn't know what to feel for or what to do he is not a doctor, so your best bet is to go to the doctor. Good Luck
