The process of buying and selling clothes online doesn't seem to have been as successful as selling books, CDs or other hard goods, especially in the beginning.
With these types of items, people generally know exactly what they are getting, whereas clothes-buying over the internet is a bit more hit and miss. The item may not fit, it might not suit you, or the colour might not quite match up with that lovely little skirt you were planning to wear with it to your best friend's wedding.
Also customers may prefer to feel texture of what they are buying. Thickness, coarseness and what sort of finish a fabric has are hard to convey over the Net. Likewise colour does not appear on the Web exactly as it does when viewed directly. This is because there is a limited colour palette available to Web browsers. All this makes sense - but nowadays there are some excellent online retailers who will refund any unwanted items without making a fuss.
People buy goods online that are cheaper than anywhere else or that they can't buy anywhere else. This means that online clothing companies tend to be successful if they are cheap, unique or a well-known brand so people know what they are getting. Likewise, buying designer or luxury goods online appeals to shoppers who have a lot of money, but not much time to go shopping in person.
Technological developments are addressing the issue of being able to try clothing on. Virtual changing rooms are being designed where the customer enters their measurements and they can see what a garment would look like on. Look into the returns policy for online clothes websites. If they have free delivery and free returns then it is worth ordering clothes to try them on, as you can return them if they aren't suitable. The advantage of this is that you can try them on with your other clothes and you don't have to carry them home.
Online clothes websites are good for designer clothes and clothing it would be hard to find elsewhere, for instance custom-made bloomers, or tie-dyed baby clothes. There are websites which sell vintage clothes as well and designer accessories such as sunglasses, hats, bags, jewellery and ties. Some clothing websites also sell lingerie. Buying lingerie online is a good idea for those who are looking for something a bit more risqué and who prefer the discretion and privacy of buying lingerie over the Internet. Some well-known High-Street fashion shops and department stores now have websites and online ordering. Brand names are available through the Net.
Be careful when ordering goods from abroad as they can end up being more expensive than you would think because of shipping costs. UK websites usually have free UK delivery for orders over a certain amount. Check when the money goes out of your account, ie is it on the day of delivery or when you order. This can make a difference if you are not sure what size you are and want to order different sizes so you can try the clothes on at home and send back the incorrect sizes.
