Who is Ricardo Tisci?
The fashion world is constantly on the look out for hot new talent, and the name that's currently tripping off the glamorously-glossed lips of every style savvy individual worth their front row seat is that of Riccardo Tisci. Why? Because the handsome 31-year-old Italian is currently doing what John Galliano, Alexander McQueen and Julien Macdonald all tried and failed to do: to make Givenchy cool again
brief history
Before accepting the high profile position of designing Givenchy's haute couture and women's ready-to-wear lines, Tisci had been working on his own fledging label in Milan and had also done stints at Puma, Ruffo Research, Coccapani and Missoni. On going to Givenchy, the Central St Martin's trained Tisci admitted: 'I feel honored to bring my own vision to the legendary French couture house, whose history is a great inspiration to me."
Surreal and sexy
Tisci's approach to reinventing Givenchy has been both clever and multidimensional. Not only does he want to breathe new life into the label by creating cool, contemporary and covetable pieces, he's also respectful of its heritage and intent on making the brand talked about in other ways. For example, his 2006 haute couture line was showcased at the Musée Bourdelle in Paris instead of on a catwalk and in place of make-up, models had their faces delicately etched with lace. Then of course there's the very hip current advertising campaign, which features Tisci's muse and hot model du jour Mariacarla. The somewhat surreal images of her pouting and holding an oversized balloon on a skyscraper rooftop in a succession of oh-so sexy numbers couldn't be more different from the rather stuffy and grandiose Givenchy ads of yesteryear.
A little respect
Although Tisci may have only worked for Givenchy for just under a year, his razor sharp sartorial vision, coupled with a genuine appreciation for the brand's history, is definitely helping the French label to claw back its deserved place on planet fashion. 'What's great about Tisci's work is the respect he pays to the Givenchy archives without being too literal', says Gobetti. 'The woman who wears Lanvin or understands the conceptual beauty of Balenciaga would now wear Givenchy", he concludes. Ladies, it looks like there's a new glamour guru to worship!
