Normal sizes are 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1 1/2 etc. If you are in Hollywood, it is 5, 10, 20 etc.

well there is no normal. diamonds vary in size from a couple points to a few carats. A point is 1/100 of a carat. 1/4 caret=25points. When found Most diamonds are larger but because of flaws are cut down to make smaller better quality diamonds. I cant tell you much about the grading system, I just dint remember. But a 1 carat Diamond I would think would be "normal" but not what there is the most of. My self I like the size of about a 60-70 point

i'm not sure about norm. Diamonds are natural stones and can come in all sizes.
Even where you've got a round figure given, say 0.5ct, when you take a look at the certificate you will see, 0.48ct, or 0.53ct, etc.
For earstuds, always popular, 0.5ct is about the minimum of what looks ok on an adult woman's ear, though 0.6 or 0.7 (or 0.75) is better, and you need at least 1ct to start making an impression.
For earstuds for a teenager or a little girl, you can go lower (0.2, 0.3) - you even should go lower, because apart from very wealthy neighborhoods, a teenager with 1ct earstuds looks a bit out of place ;-)
As soon as the stones are "visible (say, 0.5ct), then the cut and colour start mattering more. And although it can be tempting to try to go larger and lesser quality, this should not be overdone because a lower quality, less well cut stone will just sparkle much less.
on good, reliable internet sites, a 1ct mounted diamond earstud, decent colour (F), decent clarity (VS2) will be around 6'500 dollars, so 13'000 for a pair (total weight 2ct). If you settle for half that (1ct total) you'll drop to 3-3'500 for the pair.
hope this helps a bit.
